A Review of Turbine and Compressor Aerodynamic Forces in Turbomachinery

Aerodynamic forces due to blade-tip clearance eccentricity are a known destabilizing source in rotating machinery with unshrouded impellers. Dynamic also appear shrouded impellers, changes the pressure gap between impeller casing and its shroud. These load-dependent typically characterized by cross-coupled stiffness coefficient (k > 0). This paper reviews archival literature for quantification of induced impeller-casing both turbines compressors. Most distinctive lack experimental results indiscriminate application simple formulas predict k, including Alford’s Wachel’s equations. The disparity estimations k extends recent CFD models results. Hence, rotordynamic predictions vary widely. review reveals that engineering practice ignores accurate physical could bridge theory.
